AUSTRALIAN EDUCATION
Overview
Australia places a high priority on education and is keen to share its expertise with the rest of the world. Each year, Australia welcomes an increasing number of international students to study in our universities, institutes, colleges and schools. In 1998, there were 147,000 international students studying in Australia. The majority of these students (75%) undertook courses in the higher education and vocational education sectors. The most popular courses studied were business, administration and economics.
Australia’s standard of academic excellence is recognised and respected throughout the world. To assist in maintaining a high quality and reliable education system for international students, the Australian government has encouraged international education and training providers to adopt codes of conduct and has developed legislation to help ensure a stable, supportive and regulated environment.
