The
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) assesses the English proficiency
of people who speak English as a non-native language.
The TOEFL was developed primarily for international students who plan to study at colleges and universities in the United States and Canada, though educational institutions outside these two countries that use English as the language of instruction may also use TOEFL scores. In addition, some government agencies, professional agencies, and scholarship programs may be interested in TOEFL scores.
The TOEFL is written and administered by Educational Testing Service
(ETS). In July 1998, ETS introduced a computer-based version of the
TOEFL. While the computer-based test (CBT) is now available in many
parts of the world, the paper-based TOEFL is still offered in many countries,
including most which now offer the CBT.
